BSDHT member’s guide to taking out Dental Indemnity Insurance

Over the last year, we have worked closely with the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy to improve the Dental Indemnity landscape. The BSDHT had noticed members continually raising the issue of the cost of their indemnity even though the profession is classed as a lower-risk group. As a result of this and our collaboration, we have developed a bespoke indemnity insurance and regulatory package exclusively for BSDHT members. This guide is designed to help you understand how to obtain this insurance.

Where do I start and what’s the process?

We offer a straightforward online journey that guides you through the process of setting up your Professional Indemnity Insurance. It’s simple, easy to follow, and designed to make the experience as hassle-free as possible.

Incorporated Legal Protection within your BSDHT Membership

Our exclusive Legal Expenses Insurance policy for members of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy covers you in case of contract dispute issues and/or employment dispute matters, providing you with access to specialist legal advice and representation.

Dental care professionals often require specialised legal support, and knowing where to find reliable advice can be daunting. With our scheme, you have access to a reputable dental law firm with a proven track record of protecting the interests of dental care professionals when it matters the most. You can get coverage of up to £50,000 for legal costs related to contract disputes and employment disputes requiring a lawyer.

Below, we have outlined the process details.

  1. Membership Renewal – When you renew your membership, you will receive information about your coverage and a Policy Schedule and Policy Wording.

  1. Your Cover – Your policy will provide coverage if you need help with a contract or employment issue between you and your practice.

  1. If You Require Advice – Please call the BSDHT on 01788 575050, to confirm cover and they will provide you with the correct contact number to call for advice.

  1. If you require more than advice – A specialised law firm will provide assistance to you and arrange suitable legal representation on your behalf. The BSDHT will provide you with the necessary contact details. Please call 01788 575050.

By being a member of BDSHT, not only will you be provided with incorporated legal protection, but you will also be eligible for a discount on your dental indemnity insurance.

Dental Indemnity – The difference between Claims Made or Claims Occurrence

All Med Pro provides both claims made and claims occurrence coverage, a unique offering to Hygienists and Health therapists. But what is the difference and how can it help me?

Claims Made Insurance policies only respond to patient complaints and claims that are first notified during the period of insurance. Usually, once the policy ends, coverage ends.

Claims Occurrence policies respond to patient complaints & claims that arise following treatment or advice given during the period of insurance, regardless of how far into the future that might be. So even if the policy is no longer in force cover will be in place.

Real Life Example

A dental hygienist is performing a routine cleaning on a patient’s teeth and accidentally damages a filling, causing the patient to experience pain and discomfort. The patient may file a claim against the dental hygienist for the cost of repairing or replacing the filling and any associated medical expenses or lost wages.

If the dental hygienist has a claims occurrence insurance policy, they would be covered for this claim, regardless of when the claim is filed. This means that even if the patient files a claim several years after the incident occurred, the dental hygienist would still be covered as long as the policy was in effect at the time of the incident.

Without this type of insurance coverage, the dental hygienist may be personally responsible for paying the costs associated with the patient’s claim, which could be financially devastating. The claims occurrence insurance policy provides valuable protection for dental hygienists and therapists, allowing them to focus on providing quality care to their patients without the added worry of potential liability claims.
