Over the last year, we have worked closely with the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy to improve the Dental Indemnity landscape. The BSDHT had noticed members continually raising the issue of the cost of their indemnity even though the profession is classed as a lower-risk group. As a result of this and our collaboration, we have developed a bespoke indemnity insurance and regulatory package exclusively for BSDHT members. Dental Indemnity – The difference between Claims Made or Claims Occurrence

 

All Med Pro provides both claims made and claims occurrence coverage, a unique offering to Hygienists and Health therapists. But what is the difference and how can it help me?

 

Claims Made Insurance policies only respond to patient complaints and claims that are first notified during the period of insurance. Usually, once the policy ends, coverage ends.

 

Claims Occurrence policies respond to patient complaints & claims that arise following treatment or advice given during the period of insurance, regardless of how far into the future that might be. So even if the policy is no longer in force cover will be in place.

 

Real Life Example

 

A dental hygienist is performing a routine cleaning on a patient’s teeth and accidentally damages a filling, causing the patient to experience pain and discomfort. The patient may file a claim against the dental hygienist for the cost of repairing or replacing the filling and any associated medical expenses or lost wages.

 

If the dental hygienist has a claims occurrence insurance policy, they would be covered for this claim, regardless of when the claim is filed. This means that even if the patient files a claim several years after the incident occurred, the dental hygienist would still be covered as long as the policy was in effect at the time of the incident.

 

Without this type of insurance coverage, the dental hygienist may be personally responsible for paying the costs associated with the patient’s claim, which could be financially devastating. The claims occurrence insurance policy provides valuable protection for dental hygienists and therapists, allowing them to focus on providing quality care to their patients without the added worry of potential liability claims.
